Greener Driving
|
With cars causing air pollution, noise pollution and contributing to the emission of carbon dioxide in our environment and with the amount of traffic on our roads forecast to rise by 50% in the next 25 years the following tips set out to encourage greener and more environmentally friendly driving.
- Keep It At Home – Walking, cycling or taking public transport all or part of the way of your journey can reduce the amount of pollution in the air. It is the shortest journeys that cause the worst pollution so try and avoid getting the car out if you will be travelling less than 2 miles. Leave your car at home to avoid Congestion Charges.
- Park and Rides - By parking on the outskirts of a city you are helping to free congestion in the city centre by using the park and ride.
- Stay Calm, Stay Smooth – Aggressive driving can cause unnecessary fuel emissions and lead to a worn engine. Try to avoid accelerating too quickly or braking too harshly, and this will help to avoid road rage.
- Switch It Off – Try to switch off the engine whenever you can in order to cut emissions and save fuel.
- Weigh Less – Shed your extra load by emptying the boot and avoid wasting extra fuel carrying unnecessary items.
- Slow Down – Driving at 80mph rather than 70mph uses 10-15% more fuel.
- Look After It – Make sure your engine is properly tuned and serviced. A vehicle in good condition uses less fuel and produces cleaner emissions.
- Find A Friend – It is estimated that commuting too and from work accounts for 24% of all car mileage. Car Sharing can save time and money whilst at the same time help the environment.
- Treat Yourself – To a brand new car and pick a greener model. Hybrid Cars are more fuel efficient and better for the environment.
Remember, every little helps so anything you can do to become a greener driver will help the cause in the long run – plus, it will probably save you some money and improve your fuel efficiency
